HIRI Forecast: Trends Shaping Home Improvement Through 2029

The Home Improvement Research Institute (HIRI) recently released results of a research project entitled Top Trends Impacting the 2025-2029 Home Improvement Market Forecast. The study highlights key economic and consumer behavior shifts that are expected to shape spending patterns in the home improvement sector over the next four years.

While HIRI revised its overall 2025 home improvement growth forecast down from 3.7% to 2.5%, the mix favors professional providers over DIY. According to the report, the professional market is expected to climb by 4.6% in 2025, while consumer home improvement is projected to rise by only 1.3%.

Moving forward, the report predicts a market rebound from 2026 through 2029, led by growth in the professional segment. Meanwhile, only 55% of contractors expect the market to grow over the next year, citing concerns such as material costs and tariffs.

Even with affordability and cost challenges, the market bottom in late 2025 sets the stage for a clearer outlook from 2026 to 2029. This makes the 4th quarter a good time to review available resources and prepare to hit the ground running in 2026.
